Ambositra

Ambositra is a city in the central highlands of Madagascar . It is located about 180 kilometers south of the capital Antananarivo . The name means where there are many cattle . The number of residents rose from 16,780 (1975) to 21,350 (1993) to around 31,000 today. Most of them belong to the Betsileo people .

It is the political center of the Amoron'i Mania region in the Fianarantsoa province .

Ambositra is a trading place for rice and vegetables. In recent years tourism has offered more jobs. The city is also the center of the wood carving trade.

The city is the seat of the Diocese of Ambositra .
