Ambrosius Autpertus

Ambrosius Autpertus , also Ambrosius Ansbertus , (* around 730 in Provence ; † January 30, 784 on the way from Spoleto to Rome) was a Benedictine abbot of southern French origin and theological author.

Life

Ambrosius became abbot of the monastery of San Vincenzo on Volturno when Desiderius was king of the Lombards . His election as abbot led to disputes within the monastery, which led to the rulers getting involved: Both Pope Stephan III. as well as Charlemagnedealt with the question, whereby the differences of opinion were due on the one hand to Ambrosius' character, on the other hand to his Frankish origin. Charlemagne intervened in the dispute in the summer of 783 and reinstated Autpert in place of Abbot Potho. The matter was finally supposed to be brought before the Pope, for what purpose Autpert of Spoleto, where he had fled after his deposition, went to Rome, but on the way suddenly died under mysterious circumstances - he was probably murdered.

He wrote a number of works on biblical interpretation and general questions of faith. These included commentaries on the Apocalypse of John, the Psalms and the Song of Solomon . He also wrote the lives of saints on Paldo, Tato and Taso, a work on the Assumption of Mary and one on the battle of vice with virtue.
