The former municipality ( Freguesia ) belongs to the district ( concelho ) of Coimbra . The community had a total area of ​​11.3 km² and 1686 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

As part of the administrative reorganization in Portugal on September 29, 2013, Ameal was merged with the municipalities of Arzila and Taveiro to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Taveiro, Ameal e Arzila . The headquarters of the new municipality was Taveiro.
