Taveiro is a locality and former municipality ( Freguesia ) in the Portuguese district of Coimbra .

history

The first records of Taveiro come from the 10th century AD. Obviously, the place already existed under Moorish occupation before it was bequeathed to the monastery of Lorvão from its owners. The corresponding document from 980 represents the first secured document of Taveiro. In the course of the Christian Reconquista , Taveiro was depopulated and repopulated by the Santa Cruz Monastery in Coimbra. Taveiro later became the property of the University of Coimbra . In the course of the administrative reforms in connection with the Liberal Revolution from 1820 , Taveiro became an independent administrative unit.

Taveiro is a former parish ( freguesia ) of the district ( concelho ) of Coimbra , in the Coimbra district . 1961 inhabitants lived in it (as of June 30, 2011).

On September 29, 2013, as part of the administrative reorganization in Portugal, the municipality was merged with the municipalities of Ameal and Arzila to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Taveiro, Ameal e Arzila . Taveiro was designated as the seat of this new municipality.

Taveiro is on the most important railway line in the country, the Linha do Norte . However, only regional trains ( Urbanos ) stop here and no long-distance trains.

The place is located at junction 12 of the A1 motorway (exit Coimbra Sul).
