Ameer Makhoul

Ameer Makhoul ( Arabic أمير مخول, DMG Amīr Maḫūl ; Born June 19, 1958 ) is a Christian Palestinian Israeli and the director of the Haifa- based non - governmental organization "Ittijah". In May 2010, Makhoul was arrested and charged with espionage.

prehistory

The organization "Ittijah" was elected in 2004 as an associate member of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations . Makhoul had been intimidated for many years. He was prevented several times at the airport from flying to international congresses.

arrest

On May 6th, Ameer Makhoul was arrested in a robbery operation at his home in the middle of the night. A news blackout was imposed on the affair. Makhoul claims he was tortured during interrogation. In addition, Makhoul was unable to speak to his lawyers undisturbed while he was in detention, which is contrary to Israeli law. During that initial period of detention, it was not clear what Makhoul was accused of. Makhoul was not charged until late May. The indictment charges Makhoul and a second arrestee of espionage for Hezbollah . According to the indictment, Makhoul met the Hezbollah agent in Denmark in 2008 and was recruited. In October 2010, an understanding was negotiated in criminal proceedings , according to which he was espionage for Hezbollah. Instead, the charges of high treason were dropped, for which Makhoul would have had to spend the rest of his life in prison. In January 2011, Makhoul was sentenced to nine years in prison. The organization Amnesty International took on the case, mainly because of accusations of torture. The Bundestag -Abgeordneten Annette Groth , Jan van Aken , Christine Buchholz and more oriented on July 9, an inquiry by the federal government , which responded to the Government on July 26.

Personal life

Makhoul is the brother of former Knesset MP Issam Makhoul and is married to Janan Abdou, who is also an activist and researcher.
