The Nantucket Rock pear ( Amelanchier nantucketensis , English Nantucket serviceberry , Nantucket shadbush ) is a pome fruit crops (Pyrinae) in the family of the rose family (Rosaceae).
features
Multi-branched bush 20–150 cm high. It forms small colonies through root brood . The branches are pencil-shaped, the bark appears dark purple on young branches and turns gray with age. The wintering buds are reddish, 5–8 mm long and appear varnished. The leaves are dark green, slightly hairy and finely serrated, 2–3 cm long and 1.5–2 cm wide. The inflorescences are axillary clusters with 10–14 flowers and 2–4.5 cm long. The flowers are cream-colored, slightly hairy on the outside. The petals are 2–4 mm long. The sepals are up to 2 cm long, ovate-lanceolate and slightly bent back. The edible apple fruits are dark blue.
Distribution and location requirements
Nantucket Serviceberry is relatively rare and is under regional protection. Its distribution area extends over the New England states from Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard to Long Island . There are also scattered occurrences in Maryland , Virginia , Maine, and Nova Scotia .
The plant grows in dry, sandy, sunny habitats such as sandy grasslands and heather, moors and moraine landscapes (pitch-pine-oak, scrub-oak barrens, pine barrens), but also on river banks.
