Amelia Elizabeth Dyer , née Hobley (born in Bristol in 1837 ; died in London on June 10, 1896 ) was a British foster mother and serial killer . Dyer was charged with a variety of child murders : 200 to 400 victims were suspected; but only some proven.

Dyer took in children from across the country for a fee from single mothers, allegedly to raise them near London. However, the children soon perished, including from neglect and strangulation . Dyer kept the money and could use it for himself.

Following a tip from a doctor about four children who had died in her care, she received a prison sentence of six months in 1879 for child neglect. From this she drew the consequence not to report the death of the children any more.

A turnaround brought a bundle with a child's corpse that was found on March 30, 1896 in the Thames . An address on the packing paper led the police to a lead.

Dyer was convicted at the Old Bailey and executed by hanging in Newgate Prison . The scandal tightened the law, but did not end child trafficking .
