The American Chamber of Commerce in Germany e. V. (AmCham Germany) is a private, independent nonprofit organization and has as a registered association based in Berlin . It has offices with full-time employees in Berlin and Frankfurt. The association has over 2,300 members, many of them companies. The activities are financed exclusively through membership fees.

The association is the largest bilateral business association in Europe and sees itself as a lobbyist for the most important group of foreign investors in Germany. The aim of the chamber is to promote German-American economic relations and Germany as a business location.

history

AmCham Germany was founded on January 29, 1903 by American business people in Berlin. Initially the chamber had 100 members, 60% of whom were of American origin and 40% of German origin. AmCham Germany is considered the oldest bilateral trade association in Germany and the second oldest AmCham in the world. AmCham Germany claims to have around 2,300 members (as of 2019).

Board

In April 2018 Frank Sportolari (UPS Germany) became President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Germany, Sabine Bendiek became Executive Vice President . Before that, from 2013 to 2018 Bernhard Mattes (Association of the German Automobile Industry and Ford) and from 1991 to 2013 Fred B. Irwin , 'Vice Chairman for Germany' of Citigroup Global Markets Deutschland AG & Co. KGaA . AmCham Germany has 500 volunteers who work in around 30 regional and topic-related committees.

Economic Policy Committees

In the Chamber's political committees, position papers on topics such as tax policy, biotechnology, telecommunications, media, energy, environmental policy, financial services and corporate law are drawn up and submitted to the relevant government agencies. Participation in the board and in the committees is voluntary.

AmCham Germany Transatlantic Partnership Award

AmCham Germany has been presenting the undoped Transatlantic Partnership Award since 1987 . Prize winners were Dirk Nowitzki (2012), Bill Gates (2011), Hasso Plattner (2010), Arnold Schwarzenegger (2009), Jürgen Weber (2008), Meg Whitman (2007) and Kurt Masur (2006).

The award recognizes an active, exemplary and positive development of transatlantic relations (in the interests of the lender). This is especially true with a view to the future and securing German-American friendship.

The AmCham Germany Transatlantic Partnership Award is open to personalities as well as institutions and facilities from business, politics, science, sport and culture from Germany and the United States.

Publications

AmCham Germany regularly publishes two newsletters, each once a month, which provide information on a wide range of topics and are sent to different target groups. The Chamber News newsletter is published every eight weeks and is aimed exclusively at association members. The newsletter contains information and business services for company members, current briefings on US politics, announcements about upcoming events, event reports, staff changes and portrays individual member companies in interviews. The public newsletter, The Navigator, appears every two months, alternating with Chamber News, and includes interviews with politicians or economic experts on current economic policy topics, position papers and briefings on transatlantic relations, guest articles, comments, podcasts and videos.

AmCham Germany's podcast The Clue is the podcast for professionals in transatlantic relations and is produced monthly by AmCham Germany. Political decision-makers, economic experts, scientists and journalists are regularly invited to discuss current transatlantic issues.

The Annual Report presents signature events, meetings with protagonists from politics and business as well as business luncheons and gives an overview of the AmCham Germany network.

In cooperation with member companies, the association publishes various studies. This includes the AmCham Germany Transatlantic Business Barometer , a study that is carried out annually in cooperation with Roland Berger Strategy Consultants and documents the dissatisfaction / satisfaction of US companies in Germany. In addition, AmCham Germany, together with the management consultancy Accenture, publishes the annual TOP 50 ranking of the US companies with the highest turnover in Germany.
