The American Cocker Spaniel is a dog breed from the USA recognized by the FCI (No. 167, Gr. 8, Sec. 2) .
Origin and history
The American Cocker Spaniel was bred out of the English Cocker Spaniel . The time when the first English Cocker Spaniels came to the USA is unknown - what is certain is that by 1930 the deviation from the original type was so great that the dogs were treated as a separate breed. In 1940 a separate standard was set for the breed; recognition by the FCI followed eleven years later. The most obvious changes are the thicker coat and the rounder skull.
description
The American Cocker Spaniel is the smallest member (up to 38 cm) in the group of Spaniels . He has a strong, compact body, a noble head and is a completely balanced dog overall. The distance from the tip of the sternum to the point of the ischium is slightly longer than the distance from the highest point of the withers to the floor.
The body is slightly sloping towards the muscular hindquarters , the chest is deep, its lowest point no higher than the elbows, and sufficiently wide in the front for sufficient space for the heart and lungs. The hair should be short and fine on the head and of medium length on the body with sufficient underhair for protection. The hangings, chest, belly and the back of the legs are well feathered.
The fur is either monochrome or multi-colored. It is monochrome black or black with tan markings (a little white on the chest and / or neck is allowed). Other monochromatic colors are also common, varying from the lightest cream to the darkest red, including brown and brown with tan markings. Multi-colored, it has two or more clear, well-defined colors, one of which must be white. Varying cream to the darkest red, brown / white and “ roan ”, including any of these color combinations with tan badges. The ears are lobed, long, leathery, well feathered, not set above the line of the lower eye area.
American Cocker Spaniels can live to be 12 years and older.
use
Due to the lush coat, the American Cocker Spaniel is hardly useful as a hunting dog. Nevertheless, he still has his hunting instinct, which is why he needs a lot of exercise. Today these dogs are pure show dogs and are mostly kept as companion and family dogs.
Essence
American cockers are considered to be very happy, gentle but also lively dogs who get on well with children and very well with other dogs. His hunting instinct, however, requires consistent training.
