American Football is an American indie rock band from Urbana , Illinois .
Band history
American Football emerged from The One Up Downstairs after the brothers David and Allen Johnson left the band and the other two band members Mike Kinsella and Steve Lamos wanted to continue making music together. So Steve Holmes was added to the group, which of course then needed a new name. The Johnsons, on the other hand, went to Very Secretary and later to Favorite Saints .
American Football released an EP on Polyvinyl Records in 1998 and a long player the following year. The band had a few live performances. Her last appearance was in May 1999 at the Fireside Bowl in Chicago. Before their LP came out, which continues to enjoy great recognition, the band had already split up. Steve Lamos and Steve Holmes switched to The Geese , Mike Kinsella initially founded Owls and later pursued his solo project Owen .
In 2014 the band got back together with their original line-up and played some live concerts in New York . They were supported by Nate Kinsella on bass, who ultimately became a permanent member of the reunited band. Encouraged by the success of these performances, further international concerts followed.
In October 2016 the band released a long player again. As in 1999, the band name was also the title of the album. Both albums entered the US album charts.
In 2019 the band released their third album. It bears the title American Football again .
Trivia
- According to Mike Kinsella, the band name was inspired by his girlfriend, who only commented on a Chicago Bears advertising flyer : "Come see American Football, featuring the most overpaid athletes in the world". Mike had to think about rock and pop stars, the most overpaid musicians in the world.
