List of domestic dogs

The American Foxhound is an FCI ( No. 303, Gr. 6, Sec. 1 ) recognized dog breed from the United States. The breed is the official state dog of the US state Virginia .

Origin and history

The American Foxhound was gradually created by crossing different breeds of dogs. Among his ancestors are French running and pack dogs, English foxhounds, harriers and German sweathounds. Different American Foxhound types emerged, depending on the type of hunt. Even today, a distinction is often made between several variations of the breed, e.g. B. There are solid red "July dogs" which are used for hunting coyotes - other variations are the "Trigg dogs" or the "Goodmann dogs". There are seven or eight different stud books in the United States today. The number of American Foxhounds is estimated at over 100,000.

description

The American Foxhound is closely related to the English Foxhound . While the English cousin is mainly used for hunting in packs, the American today is more of a show dog and can often be found at exhibitions. The back moderately long, muscular and strong. The chest should be deep to provide enough space for the lungs, it is narrower in relation to the depth (for example: a 58 cm dog should have a chest circumference of 71 cm). The hair is thick and harsh of medium length, all colors are allowed. The American Foxhound is slightly smaller, taller and lighter in construction than the English Foxhound.

The ears are set moderately low and long; When folded forward, they should reach almost, if not completely, to the tip of the nose. They are thin and have rounded ends. The eyes are large and gentle, their color fluctuates between brown and hazel.
