American Movie is an American documentary directed by Chris Smith from 1999. The film documents the making of the independent film Coven between 1996 and 1997.

action

The enthusiastic filmmaker Mark Borchardt tries in the first part of the film to implement a drama he wrote called Northwestern . However, the project grows over his head after just a few weeks. When the actors and volunteers lose faith in the project, Borchardt changes his plan and tries to complete a short film called Coven, which has already been partially shot . With the money he borrowed from his family and earned from his work in the cemetery, and the support of his parents and his best friend Mike Schank, he feverishly tries to finish the film and then distribute it on VHS. With the proceeds from this project, Northwestern will finally be ended.

Reception and aftermath

American Movie was developed by the New York Times to the list of The Best 1,000 Movies Ever Made taken and, according to the International Documentary Association 's 20 best documentaries. At the 1999 Sundance Film Festival , the film was awarded the Grand Jury Prize in the Documentation category. The American film critic Roger Ebert rated American Movie with 4 out of 4 possible points. The rating aggregator Metacritic recorded a Metascore of 84 out of 100 for Chris Smith's film. The average rating on Rotten Tomatoes is 94%.

The film enjoys cult status in the independent film scene and is often quoted by other filmmakers, such as James Rolfe . Mark Borchardt gained great fame in the USA through the film and appeared several times on the David Letterman TV show . In the episode Brian Sings & Swings of the animated series Family Guy , Borchardt and Mike Schank are guest speakers and set their characters from American Movie to music .
