The death of Eric Garner occurred on the afternoon of July 17, 2014 on Staten Iceland in New York. The 43-year-old asthma sufferer, Eric Garner, was killed while being forcibly handcuffed by several police officers during his arrest. Two videos of the incident published on YouTube made it public. On December 3, 2014, a grand jury ruled that officer Daniel Pantaleo, chief police officer, would not be charged. Although police brutality against African Americans in the United States had been repeatedly complained about, such as the Michael Brown case in Ferguson, the Walter Scott case in North Charleston and the Freddie Gray case in Baltimore, the Garner case represented a turning point in public perception His death had hit the headlines around the world, and his final words, "I can't breathe," had become a slogan for the Black Lives Matter movement.

Pantaleo was discharged from police service in August 2019 without a right to a pension.
