Amicalola Falls

The Amicalola Falls are a waterfall in Dawson County in the US state of Georgia . The 222 m high falls are the highest waterfalls in Georgia and are considered the highest in the United States east of the Mississippi .

geography

The falls come from Amicalola Mountain , a mountain range of up to 1,020 m in the Blue Ridge Mountains , which extends from Dawsonville in a northeasterly direction to the Nimblewill Gap not far from Springer Mountain . From its southwest side, Little Amicalola Creek plunges in seven steps into a pond that drains into the Etowah River .

history

The falls were called Um Ma Calo La in the Cherokee language, which means "tumbling water". They were first mentioned in 1832 by the surveyor William Williamson . In 1940, the Amicalola Falls State Park surrounding the falls was established.
