The Springer Mountain is a 1,148 m high mountain in the Blue Ridge Mountains on the border between the Fannin County and the Gilmer County in the north of the State of Georgia . The mountain lies within the Chattahoochee National Forest and is the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail .
geography
The mountain consists of a broad hilltop that is only thinly wooded with oaks because of the rocky subsoil. Due to its remoteness and rocky subsoil, the forest has never been cleared. There is a bronze plaque on the summit showing the southern end of the Appalachian Trail and a simple shelter. There are several forest roads leading to the mountain, the most popular access is via a 13 km hiking trail from Amicalola Falls State Park .
history
The origin of the name is not known exactly, it was probably named after the settler William G. Springer in 1833 . In 1956, the Appalachian Trail Club decided to relocate the southern end of the Appalachian Trail to Springer Mountain after roads and farms destroyed the natural surroundings of Oglethorpe Mountain , 14 miles away , the trail's original terminus.
