Amisfield Tower

Amisfield Tower is a tower house near the Scottish town of Amisfield in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. It is also classified as a Scheduled Monument . The property is not to be confused with Amisfield House in East Lothian .

description

The Tower House is isolated around one kilometer northwest of Amisfield. It was one of the fortifications of the Charteris clan , who built it in 1600. It is possible that there was a previous structure at the site that was merely extensively revised. So the foundation could be 60 years earlier up to the level of the great hall.

Former entrance portal of Amisfield Tower

Amisfield Tower has an approximately square footprint of 9.6 mx 8.7 m. The four-story quarry stone structure with details made of reddish natural stone is 23.5 meters high. The entrance portal is on the south side. A door dating from 1600 shows Samson's fight with the lion and is now on display in the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland . A rounded stair tower emerges on the southeast edge, while two corner tiers with conical roofs protrude on the north side . Rectangular windows and loopholes are embedded in the facades . The tower closes with a slate roof . A house with a gable roof sits on the east side of the gable , while the west side has a stepped gable .

The rooms inside have roughly L-shaped floor plans, which is due to the stair tower. In the ground floor room with a vaulted ceiling , a room is separated that could have served as a guard room. Open chimneys are let into the first and second floors on the west side. The latter floor is also decorated with a painted frieze . The roof structure rests on corbels .
