Sequence of events

At around 10:45 am, the recognized refugee Karel Charva entered the classroom of a sixth grade at the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Schule and opened fire on the teacher Franz-Adolf Gehlhaar . He was hit by eight shots, but survived. Charva fired from two pistols at the students and at the headmaster of the school, Hans-Peter Schmitt, who had rushed up from a neighboring room. Schmitt and three students (Stefanie Herrmann, Javier Martinez and Gabriele Siebert) were killed.

Police officer Gisbert Beck , who was involved in traffic education in the schoolyard , confronted the gunman unarmed and was shot by Charva. When the Eppstein police arrived at the scene, the perpetrator barricaded himself in a classroom and finally killed himself.

Perpetrator

Karel Charva fled to Germany after the intervention of the Warsaw Pact troops in 1968 during the Prague Spring ; from 1971 he was granted political asylum . Most recently he worked for a security company in Frankfurt.
