In the early modern period , offices were a level between the municipalities and the sovereignty . The functions of administration and jurisdiction were not separated here. The office was headed by a bailiff who was appointed by the rulers.

history

With the Rhine Confederation Act of 1806, state sovereignty over the Burggrafschaft Friedberg fell to the Grand Duchy of Hesse. This was done with the restriction that the burgrave, Clemens August von Westphalen , retained the title and rights of a landlord in the former burgrave until his death . In 1817 he contracted his rights to the state.

After the rights had passed to the state, the Grand Duchy reorganized the localities in the former burgraviate in 1817. Out

he formed the office of Großkarben .

This did not last long. From 1820 there were administrative reforms in the Grand Duchy of Hesse. In 1821, jurisdiction and administration were separated at the lower level and all offices were dissolved. For the previously perceived by the offices administrative tasks were district districts created for the first-instance jurisdiction district courts. The administrative tasks of the former office of Großkarben were transferred to the district of Vilbel and the jurisdiction to the district court of Großkarben .
