Building history
The administrative building of the municipal district office on the corner of Laxenburger Straße and Gudrunstraße, which also includes the office of the district chairman and the meeting room of the district council, was built in 1881/82 by the building construction department of the Vienna city building department under the direction of Friedrich Paul (1830-1900) and Josef Pürzl built and opened on January 16, 1883. It is built in the Gothic -style late historical style using exposed brick. The elementary schools for girls and boys that already existed there and opened in 1871, the orphanage opened in 1878 and the rectory of the parish church of St. John the Evangelist built in 1879 were combined into one complete block with this new building.
On Gudrunstraße, the symmetrical facade is structured by a richly decorated central projectile with lower side wings. The ballroom is located behind the pointed arched windows on the 1st floor.
A plan of Favoriten 1881 drawn in ink, made by a district official, does not yet show the district office, but only the school and church buildings mentioned above.
From 1882 on, the office building was the second location of the professional fire brigade in Favoriten, before moving to the site of the abandoned Sonnwendgasse 14 gasworks in 1909 , where the Favoriten main fire station still exists today.
The building was badly damaged in 1944 and 1945 by US bombing and artillery shelling by the Red Army advancing from the south during World War II . Reconstruction work began immediately after the end of the war.
