Amtsplatz 1 (Bregenz)
The house office space one is a former prison Fronfeste in the upper town of Bregenz , which is used as an office building today. The building is under monument protection ( list entry ).
history
The former castle or city palace of the Counts of Bregenz and the former upper gate of the city wall originally stood in place of the current building . In the years from 1857 to 1860 the prison, the so-called "Fronfeste", was built. Political prisoners and ethnic minorities were imprisoned here during the Second World War . After the prison is closed, the building will be used as the seat of the State Conservatory for Vorarlberg of the Federal Monuments Office .
architecture
The building has three floors and is symmetrical. It has two side elevations . In the middle of the building is a round arch portal , the windows are also round arched, the latter partly with shutters. The individual floors are separated by surrounding cornices , the building edges and the facade of the ground floor are grooved. Inside, most of the sandstone floor slabs and the prison cells can still be seen.
