The Amundsen Plain (English for Amundsen Plain , also known as Amundsen Abyssal Plain ) is an abyssal plain in the Southern Ocean . It lies far off the coast of the West Antarctic Marie Byrd Land .

The name is derived from that of the Amundsen coast in the Antarctic Ross Dependency and was confirmed in June 1988 by the US Advisory Committee for Undersea Features (ACUF). The namesake of the coast is the Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen (1872-1928), who, along with four companions on December 14, 1911 according to with dog sleds carried out march across the Ross Ice Shelf, the Axel Heiberg Glacier and the central Polar Plateau was the first to had reached the geographic south pole .
