Amyntas IV.
Amyntas IV (Greek: Ἀμύντας; † 336 BC ) was a king of Macedonia from the house of the Argeadians .
Amyntas was the son of King Perdiccas III. and only three years old when this 359 BC Died in the fight against the Illyrians . Therefore, his uncle, Philip II , initially took over the reign of the country until he was in 356 BC. Chr. Usurped the throne completely . Amyntas continued to be treated as a full member of the royal family by his uncle. Among other things, several sons of the nobility were put at his side as youth companions ( syntrophoi ), one of them was Philotas . Amyntas was also married to Kynane , a daughter of Philip II.
Despite the loss of power, the royal rank of Amyntas seems to have continued to be recognized, especially in the Greek world, probably in order to discredit the rule of Philip II as illegitimate. An honor in his favor by the Boeotian Lebadeia identifies him as king, the city of Oropos granted him honorary citizenship ( proxenia ). In 336 BC Philip II was murdered in the 3rd century BC, whereupon his son Alexander the Great took over the rule as king. Amyntas seems to have planned an attempted coup when Alexander had to assert his rule in his first year of reign. In any case, Amyntas was executed by him.
Amyntas IV. Had a daughter from his marriage to Kynane, Adea / Eurydike , who later lived with King Philip III. Arrhidaios was married.
