Perdiccas III. was king of Macedonia from 365 BC. BC to 359 BC In the succession of his brother Alexander II . He was the second eldest son of Amyntas III. and the Eurydice .

When he ascended the throne he was still a minor, so that Ptolemy of Aloros , who was responsible for the death of his brother, took over the reign. When Pausanias, another pretender to the throne, took power over large parts of Macedonia, they turned to the Athenians for help. They sent the general Iphikrates , with whose support they could drive out Pausanias. After a reign of three years, Perdiccas had Ptolemy of Aloros executed and took over the government himself.

In the following time there were disputes with Athens over the city of Amphipolis . Perdiccas is said to have no one involved in government except philosophers and geographers. Plato sent him Euphraius of Oreos as an advisor with a letter of recommendation, the so-called 5th Letter of Plato .

Perdiccas fell in a battle against the Illyrian king Bardylis , and was succeeded by his son Amyntas IV. Since he was only three years old, Perdiccas younger brother Philip II took over the affairs of government.
