Greece

Greece and the Middle East at the time of Philip's death
  • Spring - First Macedonian troops (10,000 men) under Parmenion cross the Hellespont and land in Asia , but are stopped by Persian troops under Memnon of Rhodes off Attarneos. Another advance is delayed by the assassination of Philip II .
  • Summer - Philip II, King of Macedonia, is murdered in Aigai of Pausanias during the wedding of his daughter Cleopatra to Alexander I , King of Epiros . The assassin is killed shortly afterwards by friends of his son Alexander .
  • Alexander the Great becomes King of Macedon at the age of 20.
  • Alexander the Great arrives in Corinth to secure the allegiance of the Greek cities after Philip's death. In Thrace and Illyria , however, rebellions against him broke out.
