Alexander train
In spring Alexander the Great begins the Persian campaign planned by his father Philip II with 5,000 horsemen and 30,000 foot soldiers and in May he wins the Battle of Granikos over the Persians under Memnon of Rhodes . Alexander visits Troy and makes an offering at the tomb of Achilles . He entered Sardis without a fight and turned to Miletus , which was defended by the local satrap, but could be conquered under Nikanor in a combined operation with the Macedonian fleet (160 ships) .
Then follows the long and costly siege of Halicarnassus , where Memnon has withdrawn, which also ends with the conquest by Alexander's troops. Alexander wins Caria for himself by appointing Ada , the daughter of the last satrap, as governor of the area, while he passes Lycia and Pamphylia , which he subsequently passes through, to Nearchus for administration.
At the end of the year Alexander arrives in Gordion in Central Anatolia from the south , while his general Parmenion takes the direct route from Ionia eastwards. In Gordion, Alexander is said to have cut the Gordian knot with his sword; According to a legend, rule over Asia would fall to whoever would untie the knot.
