an-Nawawī
1233 in Nawa ; died 1277 ibid) was a Sunni lawyer and traditional scholar of the Shafiite direction, who studied and taught in Damascus . He was born in Nawa, near Damascus. The last part of his name an-Nawawī indicates this fact. During his work, he especially drew the anger of the Mamluks ruler Rukn al-Din Baybars, as he repeatedly campaigned for the interests of the people of Damascus.
His lasting influence includes in particular the hadith literature, which he had a lasting impact on with his two best-known works, The Book of Forty Hadith and The Gardens of the Virtuous .
LWC van den Berg (1845–1927) translated one of his Shafiite religious rules into French.
