The An Caisteal is a 995 meter high mountain in Scotland . Its Gaelic name means The Castle . It is located in the southern highlands south of the village of Crianlarich in Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park and is one of the Munros .
To the east of the elongated, predominantly grassy ridge running in north-south direction and interspersed with rocky parts in the higher area, the highest point of which is the An Caisteal, lies the deeply cut valley of the upper River Falloch , one of the tributaries of Loch Lomond , which flows into the Summit area of the neighboring Beinn a 'Chroin to the south . The 709 meter high Top Sròn Gharbh forms the northern end of the ridge . To the west, the An Caisteal has a smaller branch ridge running to the northwest, which ends in the top of the 710 meter high Stob Glas . To the southeast and southwest of the summit, the 809 meter high saddle of Bealach Buidhe leads to the neighboring Beinn a 'Chroin and a wide grassy saddle a little over 600 meters high to Beinn Chabhair , both also Munros. The watershed between Scottish west and east coast also runs here.
The An Caisteal can be climbed from Crianlarich in the north as well as from the south, many mountaineers combine this with one or both of the neighboring Munros. In the north, the ascent begins on the A82 southwest of Crianlarich in Glen Falloch and leads over the entire elongated ridge. The southern starting point, albeit with a significantly longer climb, is the small settlement Inverlochlarig west of Balquhidder .
