Anabasis is a genus of plants inthe foxtail family (Amaranthaceae).

description

Anabasis species are annual or perennial herbaceous plants or subshrubs . The fleshy stems are clearly structured, their surface is mostly bare except for tufts of hair at the nodes, less often with papilla-like trichomes or woolly hair. The leaves are opposite, they can be reduced to scales or clearly developed.

The inflorescences are elongated or compressed ears . The hermaphrodite flowers stand individually or in groups of up to four sunken in the axils of the bracts, with two lateral bracteoles. The inflorescence consists of 5 membranous tepals that are somewhat unequal in width . There are three to five stamens that have no appendages. Staminodes can be found between the stamens . The ovary is vertical with two to three short, thick stigmas. The ripe fruit can be berry-like or dry, it is either upright and compressed or almost spherical. The seed stands vertically and is roughly lenticular. It is filled by the spiral embryo and there is no nutrient tissue.

At the fruiting time, membranous, somewhat unevenly wide wings are usually formed on the back of some or all of the tepals. The tepals rarely remain wingless. The fruit ripens very late, usually in November.

Distribution and habitat

The genus Anabasis is distributed from southwest Europe and North Africa over the coast of the Red Sea (Ethiopia) to southwest and central Asia. Asia is the area with the greatest morphological variation. The species grow in steppes and semi-deserts.

Systematics

The generic name Anabasis was first published in 1753 by Carl von Linné in Species Plantarum p. 223. Type species is anabasis aphylla L. synonyms are Brachylepis C.A.Meyer and Esfandiaria Sharif & Aellen and Fredolia (Coss. & Durieu ex Bunge) Ulbr.

The genus Anabasis belongs to the Salsoleae s tribe . st. in the subfamily of the Salsoloideae within the family of the Amaranthaceae . According to Akhani et al. 2007 29 species:
