Anat Berko ( Hebrew ענת ברקו; * January 14, 1960 in Jerusalem ) is an Israeli politician of the Likud party .

Life

Anat Berko was born in Jerusalem as the second of six children of Iraqi refugees. She studied psychology, sociology and criminology at Bar-Ilan University ; in the latter subject she received her doctorate. She served in the Israel Defense Forces for 25 years . When she left the army, she held the rank of lieutenant colonel . She then lectured at the Lauder School of Government of the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya and was visiting professor at George Washington University in Washington, DC Her research area includes suicide attacks. She also interviewed Hamas leader Ahmad Yasin .

Berko has been a member of the Knesset since 2015 . She is married to a man named Reuven, who is a specialist in Arab affairs, and has three children with him.

Controversy

In February 2016, Berko hit the headlines for her testimony that there was no Palestinian people because Arabic did not have the letter P. Her remark was sharply criticized by both Palestinians and Knesset MP Tamar Zandberg . The Arab MP Osama Saadi left the Chamber because of Berko's statement during her speech.
