Anat Kam (2008)

Anat Kam (alternative spelling Anat Kamm , Hebrew ענת קם; * 1987 in Jerusalem ) is an Israeli journalist.

Life

Kam was born in Jerusalem in 1987 and attended Hebrew University Secondary School. In her youth she became interested in journalism and wrote for the local newspaper Jerusalem (formerly Yedioth Jerusalem ), as well as for the youth channel of the website Walla! .

In July 2005, Kam began her military service in the Israeli army. From 2005 to 2007 she completed this in the office of General Jair Naweh , the then head of the Israeli Central Command .

After completing her military service, she began studying history and philosophy at Tel Aviv University in November 2008 . Most recently she wrote for the Internet portal Walla! , which belongs to the Israeli daily Haaretz , on pop culture .

Trial and sentencing

In January 2010, Kam was charged with espionage and violating state security. She was accused of forwarding classified documents to Israeli investigative journalist Uri Blau while serving in the army , who allegedly used them in a report on the illegal killing of three Palestinians by Israeli soldiers. Said incident occurred in Jenin in June 2007 , in November 2008 Blau's article appeared in the Haaretz . In total, Kam is said to have copied around 2000 pages, a good third of which were classified as "Top Secret". The military censors had no objections to Blau's text.

Kam was under house arrest from December 2009 ; At the same time, a news blackout was imposed, which was only relaxed in early April 2010 after information about the case became known internationally. On October 30, 2011, she was sentenced to four and a half years plus one and a half suspended prison sentences for collecting, possessing and distributing classified military documents - the espionage charges were dropped. The nearly two-year house arrest did not count towards the sentence.

Kam began her sentence on November 23, 2011 in Neve Tirza Women's Prison. On December 31, 2012, the Supreme Court reduced the sentence to three and a half years and one and a half to probation.

On January 26, 2014, Anat Kam was released early for good conduct after being detained for 26 months.
