Anatoli Papanov ( Russian Анатолий Дмитриевич Папанов * 31 October 1922 in Vyazma , Smolensk , † 5. August 1987 in Moscow ) was a Soviet theater and cinema actor of Russian origin. Known and popular especially as an actor in comedies, he also excelled in serious roles and received several awards.

Life

Papanow was born in 1922 in Vyazma in what is now Smolensk Oblast, the son of a working-class family who moved to Moscow in the 1930s. In Moscow he began to work as a foundryman in the Second Moscow Ball Bearing Factory and at the same time became involved in the popular theater studio "Kautschuk", which the factory ran as part of its own artistic initiative.

Papanov had been at the front since the first days of the German-Soviet War . As a senior sergeant, he commanded an anti-aircraft platoon. In 1942 he was seriously injured in the leg near Kharkov and was therefore already an invalid at the age of 21. He returned to Moscow and entered the famous GITIS theater school , where he became a student of Marija Orlowa and Vasily Orlow . He successfully passed his state examination in 1946.

After graduating from GITIS, he received offers from the renowned MChAT Theater and the Maly Theater , but he went to Klaipėda with his whole class to build a new theater there. Also present was Nadezhda Karatajewa which his classmate in GITIS was. They married on May 20, 1945. Papanov played his first role in the Russian Dramatic Theater of Klaipeda.

In 1948 Papanov accepted an invitation from the director Andrei Goncharov to the Satire Theater in Moscow. Papanow stayed at this theater for 40 years and participated in 50 productions. Some of these productions have also been recorded for cinema and television. He began to appear in smaller roles in television comedies. His breakthrough as a film actor came with his portrayal of General Serpilin in the film The Living and the Dead (1963), for which he was awarded the State Vasilyev Brothers Prize of the RSFSR in 1966. He achieved greatest popularity with the comedies of the director Leonid Gaidai , especially The Arm of Diamonds . He also lent his voice to the wolf in the cartoon series Hare und Wolf .

Anatoly Papanov died of a heart attack on August 5, 1987. He was buried in the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow.

family

Anatoly Papanov's marriage to Nadezhda Jurjewna Karatajewa had a daughter named Jelena Papanowa, who is an actress at the Yermolowa Theater.

Honors

In 1958 he was awarded the RSFSR Honored Artist Award, the RSFSR People's Artist Award in 1966, and the USSR People's Artist Award in 1973 .

Anatoly Papanov was posthumously awarded the State Prize of the USSR in 1989 for his role in The Cold Summer of 53 . An asteroid also bears his name . A few days after his death, Andrei Mironov , with whom Papanow had starred in numerous film productions, also died.
