Anatoly Georgievich Novikov

Anatoli Georgijewitsch Novikow ( Russian Анатолий Георгиевич Новиков , scientific transliteration Anatolij Georgievič Novikov ; * 1935 ; † 2004 in Moscow ) was the last head of the KGB's Berlin foreign office .

Life

Nowikow took over the management of the foreign office in Berlin-Karlshorst when glasnost and perestroika were in full swing in the Soviet Union . He oversaw a secret operation code-named Lutsch (Russian for beam ). The aim was to recruit agents of influence from all sectors of society who were willing to reform GDR citizens who were supposed to reform the system in the spirit of the Soviet Union. Operation Lutsch ended with the fall of the Wall .

After that, Nowikov's main task was to negotiate with the German government about a smooth withdrawal of the KGB troops from East Germany. In return, he assured secrecy about the information obtained by the MfS about West German politicians.

In 1992 he left Germany and went back to Moscow , where he headed the counter-espionage department in the foreign intelligence service until his retirement.
