Anatoly Petrovich Bugorsky

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Anatoly Petrovich Bugorsky ( Russian Анатолий Петрович Бугорский , English transcription Anatoly Petrovich Bugorsky, born June 25, 1942 ) is a Russian scientist who was hit by a beam from a particle accelerator in 1978 .

accident

As a researcher at the Institute for High Energy Physics in Protvino , Bugorski worked with the largest Soviet particle accelerator, the U-70 synchrotron . On July 13, 1978, Bugorski wanted to check a faulty element, but the safety precautions, which were less strict than at CERN , failed. Bugorski bent to control the element and poked his head in the path of the 76 GeV proton beam . He saw a ray that was "brighter than a thousand suns," but felt no pain.

consequences

The left half of Bugorski's face swelled up and the days later the skin peeled off in the places where the proton beam hit him through the bones and the tissue below. Thinking that Bugorsky had received a lethal dose of the radiation, he was taken to a Moscow clinic where doctors wanted to watch his death. Contrary to expectations, Bugorski survived and was able to complete his doctorate. His intellectual abilities were not affected, but he got tired more quickly. The left side of his face remained paralyzed and he lost his hearing in his left ear. Since the incident, he has had the occasional petit mal and at least six grand mal seizures. Bugorski was extensively investigated in the years following his accident and several dissertations were written on his case. He continued his scientific work and was (as of 1998) the coordinator of particle beam experiments at the accelerator in Protwino.

Private life

Bugorsky is married to Vera Nikolaevna and they have a son together.
