The Anavilhanas Archipelago, English. Anavilhanas Archipelago, also Arquipélago das Anavilhanas (port.) , Is one of the world's largest river island archipelagos . It is located about 100 km upstream of Manaus on the Rio Negro , which, due to its impending confluence with the heavily sedimenting Amazon , is about 27 km wide.
The Anavilhanas Archipelago is characterized by a unique ecosystem with great biodiversity. At low tide, almost 400 islands form over a length of around 90 km, overgrown by jungle .
The plants found here, mainly Astrocaryum jauari , Oenocarpus bacaba and Mauritia flexuosa, cover the river islands. The most widespread animal species in the archipelago are the crocodile caiman , the black caiman , the boa constrictor (idol snake), the iguana , the common squirrel monkey , and the brown woolly monkey . Furthermore, Sotalia (river dolphins), surubim (catfish), matrinxã ( Brycon amazonicus ), black pacus and manatees are found in the waters of the Rio Negro .
During the rainy season , half of the islands are flooded and form a limitless labyrinth of floating forests, streams and canals. The compact vegetation serves as a shelter for various birds, butterflies, iguanas, rodents, monkeys and snakes.
The Anavilhanas Archipelago is the natural habitat of 232 bird species counted so far.
During the dry season , the receding waters of the Rio Negro reveal white sandy beaches and natural formations of roots and trunks.
