The surubim ( Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum ), engl. Barred Sorubim, is a large species of catfish found in tropical waters of South America.

distribution

The surubim is native to the Amazon and Rio Negro in Ecuador , Peru and Brazil , and it can also be found in the Bolivian Rio Madeira . It is also found in the Orinoco and Rio Lebrijo in Colombia and Venezuela , and is found in rivers such as the Essequibo and Corantijn in French Guiana , Suriname and Guiana . It also occurs in the catchment area of the Río de la Plata and Rio Paraná in Argentina , Paraguay and Uruguay .

morphology

The catfish has an elongated body with a large mouth, which is reminiscent of a duck's bill. Three long pairs of barbels go from the mouth area. Depending on the type of water, its color is silvery to moor brown. Fine black stripes form an irregular pattern on the back and on the flanks. The eyes are relatively small.

Way of life

The nocturnal predatory fish feeds mainly on crustaceans and fish, which it tracks down near the bottom. Rogner can reach considerable weights of up to 70 kilograms with a length of 1 meter. At 45 to 55 centimeters, the catfish is sexually mature and can lay up to 8 million fish eggs per kilogram of body weight. Its habitat are waters with water temperatures of 24 - 28 ° C. It is mainly found in the deep channels of large rivers, juveniles and smaller specimens follow their prey fish (mainly Loricariidae, Cichlidae and Characoidae) into the flooded forests during the rainy season. Its behavior is very similar to its relative, the P. tigrinum, with the Surubim preferring to seek out shaded parts of the water. The construction of large dams such as the Itaipú reservoir in Brazil or the Yacyretá dam in the border area of Argentina and Paraguay prevented its spawning rise in the upper reaches of the rivers, which reduced its reproduction rate by 44%.

use

Its slightly yellowish high-quality and very tasty meat makes the surubim a very popular food fish. Since it reaches huge weights, it is a popular sport fish with anglers. Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum can also be kept in the aquarium as an ornamental fish.
