features

Andean jumper monkeys, like all jumper monkeys, are relatively small primates with long fur and a long, bushy tail. The fur is colored gray-brown on the back and on the outside of the limbs, The chest, belly and inside of the limbs are orange. The bushy tail is dark brown, the face is surrounded by a narrow, white ring of hair, the cheek hairs are gray-brown. The head is small and rounded, the hind legs are long, the tail cannot be used as a prehensile tail.

distribution and habitat

Andean jugular monkeys inhabit a small area in Peru where they only live along the Rio Mayo River in the San Martín region. Their habitat are mountain rainforests between 750 and 950 meters above sea level.

Way of life

Little is known about the way of life of the Andean jumper monkeys; it probably corresponds to that of the other jumper monkeys. Jumper monkeys are diurnal and mostly stay in the trees. They move either on four feet or by jumping. They live in family groups, the two partners often stay together for life. These groups inhabit a fixed territory that is communicated to other animals through morning duet chants. Their diet consists mainly of fruits, to a lesser extent they also eat leaves and sometimes insects. The fathers take an intensive part in raising the young, they carry the child and give it to the mother only to suckle.

Danger

The main threat to the Andean juggler monkeys is the destruction of their habitat by deforestation. In addition, there is hunting, on the one hand because of their meat, on the other hand because young are made into pets, which is associated with the killing of the parents. The IUCN lists the species as " critically endangered ".

Systematics

The Andean spring monkey is one of around 30 species from the genus of the spring monkey ( Callicebus ). It belongs to the donacophilus group, which is named after the white-eared jumper monkey and represents a rather small, primitive jumper monkey group. Geographically, it has a special role within the donacophilus group, since the other species occur further south, in the Bolivian - Brazilian region.
