life and work

From 1952 to 1956, André Gürtler completed his training as a typesetter, then he trained as a typographic designer at the Basel School of Applied Arts , where he came into contact with Emil Ruder, among others . Later he worked first in England for the Monotype Corporation in Salfords, then from 1959 to 1965 with Adrian Frutiger in Paris. In 1965 he returned to Switzerland, where he taught typeface design at the Basel School of Design from 1965 to 2000 . In addition, André Gürtler was a guest lecturer at various schools and universities in Europe, the USA and Mexico. In Mexico he held long summer courses every year and studied the local history of writing and language. In 1972 he founded the committee for research and training within ATypI . He has written numerous articles on the subjects of typography and the history of typefaces for publications in various specialist magazines such as Visible Language, tipografica and Typografische monthly papers for which he also worked in the editorial department. His fascination with the history of writing brought him around the world. He published his own history of typeface as a series of articles in the typographic monthly newspaper and conveyed the content in numerous lectures. The slides of these lectures are now archived in the center for the book in St Gallen.

His work as a type designer includes typefaces such as Basilia (1978), Signa (1978), Concorde (1959 with Adrian Frutiger ) and Haas Unica (1980 with Erich Gschwind and Christian Mengelt ).

Together with Erich Gschwind and Christian Mengelt they founded Team '77 in 1977 and developed fonts for, among others, Bobst Graphic (Lausanne) and Haas'sche Schriftgiesserei in Münchenstein. Team '77 was awarded the Swiss Grand Prix Design in 2015.
