André Leroy

André Leroy (born August 30, 1801 in Angers ; † 1875 ) was a French pomologist and tree nursery owner. Its botanical author abbreviation is " Leroy ".

Life

After graduating from the Lyceum, André Leroy worked for the botany professor André Thouin in the " Jardin des Plantes " in Paris. In 1820 he took over his parents' tree nursery , the cultivation area of ​​which he expanded from 4 to 200 hectares by 1868, making it the largest tree nursery existing in Europe at that time. By 1860 Leroy was able to achieve extensive exports of tree nursery goods to North America. The range included 1,050 pear and 600 apple varieties. At the same time he worked as a breeder of various new pear and apple varieties.

Works

  • Dictionnaire de pomologie contenant l'histoire, la description, la figure des fruits anciens et des fruits modern les plus généralement connus et cultivés in four volumes, 1867–1873. The work presents all of the pear varieties known in France and Belgium at the time.
