André Mattoni

André Mattoni , born Andreas Leo Otto Edler von Mattoni , (born February 23, 1900 in Karlsbad , † January 11, 1985 in Vienna ) was an Austrian actor .

Life

He was the son of the businessman Heinrich Edler von Mattoni and Adele, born Pupp from Karlsbad, and was born in house number 716. The owner of the health resort Gießhübl-Sauerbrunn, Heinrich von Mattoni , founder of the Carlsbad spring water dynasty Mattoni , was his grandfather. André attended the Theresianum in Vienna and received his artistic training from the castle actor Franz Herterich . As a student , he made his debut at the Burgtheater in 1922/23 .

He then worked at the Wiener Kammerspiele , then on tour in Aussig , Brno , Olmütz and Bodenbach . In autumn 1924 he came to Berlin and continued his theater work there.

Already in his first year in Berlin he got a film role and a year later he became known for an important role in Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau's Tartüff . He was then scheduled to play the leading role in Fritz Lang's Metropolis , but the role went to Gustav Fröhlich after a few weeks of shooting, which Lang did not satisfy .

Mattoni embodied gallant lovers in several roles, but gradually fell into oblivion. In 1933 he returned to Austria and performed at the Theater in der Josefstadt . From 1938 he lived in Rome and took part in Italian films. In 1942 he went back to Vienna, where he lived from then on. After the war he worked briefly as a film production manager .

Between 1957 and 1964 he was an important employee of the director of the Vienna State Opera Herbert von Karajan . In 1978 he himself appeared in the opera The Young Lord as an old lord.
