Andrés de Poza

Andrés de Poza Yarza (* approx. 1530 in Orduña ; † October 18, 1595 in Madrid : more simply known as Licentiat Poza ) was a lawyer, geographer, linguist and Spanish writer.

Life

The son of a trader and Jewish convert may not have been born to a Flemish mother until 1535 in Antwerp . He was the father of the Jesuit Juan Bautista de Poza ( Bilbao , 1588 - Cuenca (Ecuador) , 1659).

After nine years of study at the University of Leuven , he pursued a military and political career, promoted by the Governor and Captain General of Flanders , Luis de Zúñiga y Requesens . So he arrested the participants in a revolt for William I of Orange and confiscated goods of the rebels in Bergen-op-Zoom , Breda and Brabant . He studied another ten years at the Universidad de Salamanca , where he obtained his licentiate in 1570, and worked as a lawyer in the Bay of Biscay . There he married Antonia de Olaeta in June 1580. He spoke seven languages ​​and taught cosmography in the nautical school in San Sebastián and in Bilbao , where he lived for many years. He wrote a book on the nautical art Hydrografía (1585), in which he recorded the technical names of many things in several languages. In De la antigua lengua, poblaciones y comarcas de las Españas , he inserted one of the first catalogs of the Romance languages following Julius Caesar Scaliger . He represented the Vascoiberism that the Basque language was closely related to the Iberian .
