André Deutsch (born November 15, 1917 in Budapest , † April 11, 2000 in London ) was an English publisher of Hungarian origin.

Life

German learned his trade at Aldor Publications in London. Together with Francis Aldor , the owner of this publishing house, he was interned on the Isle of Man after the start of the Second World War , after he had fled Austria after the National Socialists came to power .

Deutsch made the acquaintance of Ivor Nicholson and Bernard Watson and switched for a short time from Aldor Publications to their publisher Nicholson & Watson . When a collaboration with George Weidenfeld was not possible after the end of the war , Deutsch founded the publishing house Allan Wingate around 1948 . This existed until 1952 and then went to the publishing house André Deutsch Ltd. on.

This publishing house existed as an independent company until the 1980s and was - compared to other publishing houses - relatively small, but quite influential. Deutsch has published authors such as Michael Anthony , Margaret Atwood , Helene Hanff , Jack Kerouac , Earl Lovelace , Norman Mailer , VS Naipaul , Ogden Nash , Andrew Robinson , Philip Roth , Art Spiegelman , John Updike and Charles Gidley Wheeler .

André Deutsch died on April 11, 2000 in London at the age of 83, where he found his final resting place.

Today the publishing house André Deutsch Ltd. a part ( imprint ) of the Carlton Publishing Group .
