Andrea Calmo

Andrea Calmo (* 1510 in Venice , † 1571 ) was an Italian actor and playwright in the Renaissance .

Life

Calmo achieved fame with his comedies . Some of them were based on classical models, such as “Rodiana” (1540) and “Travaglia” (1546), while others were realistic original poems ( “La Spagnola” , 1549 and “Saltuzza” , 1551). Calmo made some characters speak elegant Italian , but also used popular northern Italian dialects. His collections of dialect letters on a variety of subjects were very popular. Calmo was a follower of Angelo Beolco , also known as "Ruzzante", and a forerunner of the Commedia dell'arte .
