Andrea "Sandrino" Carrea (born August 14, 1924 in Gavi ; † January 13, 2013 in Cassano Spinola ) was an Italian professional cyclist .

Athletic career

From 1940 Andrea Carrea, a bricklayer and carter by profession, was active as an amateur and drove in the nationally successful team Siof di Pozzolo Formigaro . From 1943 to 1945 he was imprisoned in Buchenwald concentration camp in Germany . After the Second World War he won several amateur races, such as Milan-Tortona . His hometown Cassana Spinola is only a few kilometers away from that of the Coppi family. When he was working as a bricklayer for Fausto Coppi's brother , Serse , he became aware of him.

Carrea was a professional from 1949 to 1958 . He was very tall and strong and had a huge hooked nose. He was fedelissimo (Italian = most loyal ) Gregario von Coppi, together with Ettore Milano , during his entire cycling career . At the Tour de France 1952 he drove on the ninth stage from Mulhouse to Lausanne in a breakaway group with the eventual stage winner Walter Diggelmann and unexpectedly found himself wearing the yellow jersey . He only found out the news when he was already in the bathtub in the hotel, and the blind masseur Biagio Cavanna and other drivers pushed their way into the bathroom to congratulate him. However, Carrea burst into tears and asserted: "I really didn't want that ..." Only when Coppi personally assured him that he had earned the yellow jersey and also congratulated him, Carrea calmed down again. His devotion and his sense of duty to Coppi went so far that the next morning he cleaned Coppi's cycling shoes in a yellow jersey. In the overall ranking of the tour, he finally finished ninth.

At the UCI Road World Championships in 1954 in Solingen, Carrea was eleventh. He started eight times in the Giro d'Italia and twice in the Tour de France (1951 and 1952). However, he was denied further great successes.

An Italian singer who had once been a cyclist himself composed the song Un giorno, per un giorno, vorrei essere Carrea (Italian = one day, for one day, I want to be Carrea ).
