Andrea Enria (born July 3, 1961 ) is the acting chairman of the single banking supervisory mechanism (English S ingle S upervisory M echanism, SSM ) of the ECB . He was previously Chairman of the European Banking Authority . Before being appointed head of this authority, he was head of the supervisory board of Banca d'Italia from 2008 to 2010 .

Life

After studying economics in Milan and Cambridge, Enria began working for Banca d'Italia in 1988, most recently as a Senior Economist for the assessment and analysis of systemic economic risks in households and companies. From 1999 to 2004 Enria worked in Frankfurt am Main for the European Central Bank , where he was already involved in the regulation and supervision of banks. From August 2008 Enria worked again for the Banca d'Italia, until February 2011 he was responsible for controlling and compliance at the bank.

After the creation of the European Banking Authority on January 1, 2011, Enria became its chairman in February 2011.

At the end of 2013, Andrea Enria advocated that more banks should be wound up in the euro zone , since, in his view, the governments would also “keep banks in the market” that could only survive on the basis of government grants.

On November 7, 2018, the Governing Council nominated Enria for the post of supreme banking supervisor of the ECB and thus the successor to the French Danièle Nouy .

Enria speaks English , French and German .
