Andrea Hensgen (born June 28, 1959 in Mettlach ) is a German author.

Life

Andrea Hensgen grew up in Nennig on the Moselle. After attending school, she studied German language and literature, political science and sociology and worked as a lecturer in literature until 1994 . She has lived as a freelance writer since 1994.

For 2017 she is the town clerk in the North Sea resort of Otterndorf , a small town in Lower Saxony with 7,200 inhabitants at the mouth of the Elbe, approx. 15 km from Cuxhaven .

Andrea Hensgen grew up in a small village on the Moselle. After studying literature and political science at the University of Saarbrücken and training as a high school teacher in Karlsruhe, she devoted herself primarily to her three children and writing.

Her first literary works, novels for young people, emerged from her intensive occupation with European literature. They excel in how they combine cultural-historical issues with the conflicts of today's youth. In 1997 she received an annual scholarship from the state of Baden-Württemberg for her second book for young people, "Hamlet redet zuviel".

In the years that followed, she dared to take on the challenge of fiction and published novels, short stories, and a short story. What initially happened on the side, writing picture and children's books, increasingly developed into an important area of work. In 2011 this work was awarded three prizes, the children's book author's residence of the State of Luxembourg “Struwwelpippi comes to the jumping procession”, the children's book prize “Nordstemmer Zuckerrübe” for “May I stay when I'm quiet?” And the “Bad Iburger Schlossgeschichten Prize” for “visiting grandma”.

In addition, Andrea Hensgen received the “Vilnius” grant from the Hessian Literature Council in May 2011.

In addition to literary writing, A. Hensgen's interest in pedagogy and upbringing has resulted in two pedagogical non-fiction books on the subject of “fairy tales in early childhood” and church exploration with children.

A. Hensgen offers seminars and training courses for specific professional groups on these as well as literary topics, mostly in cooperation with public and church sponsors.

In order not to lose touch with her young readers in the area of children's literature, Andrea Hensgen has been working as a teacher in a Frankfurt primary school since the end of 2016. Her project “Philosophizing with Children” also serves to promote children. By playing, writing and discussing together, the children learn to find and assert their own point of view on moral issues.
