Andrea Hirata
Andrea Hirata is a younger generation Indonesian writer .
Life
Hirata comes from a simple family and was born on October 24, 1967 in Gantung on the island of Belitung - east of Sumatra - where tin has been mined since the Dutch colonial era . He spent his first school years in an Islamic dwarf school, which shaped him for life. He later studied economics in Jakarta and went to the Sorbonne in Paris and Sheffield Hallam University on a European Union scholarship , where he graduated with a master's degree in telecommunications .
After the devastating tsunami of December 2004, Hirata volunteered. In North Sumatra, the encounter with a teacher who was looking for her missing pupils became the occasion for him to write his first novel "The Rainbow Troop". In the book, which immediately sold millions in Indonesia, Hirata describes his school years in a lively and humorous way: The dilapidated school building is threatened with collapse, the school is to be closed to make way for a tin mine, but students and teachers join forces to keep teaching going.
The work was filmed in 2008 and shown at the Berlinale in 2009. It was staged as a musical in Singapore and Jakarta and was translated into 25 languages by 2013. The German translation was published by Hanser Berlin in January 2013 .
In the years 2006 to 2008 Hirata wrote three more volumes of his autobiography: "The Dreamer" (Sang Pemimpi, filmed in 2009), "Edensor" and "Maryamah Karpov". He has now written four more novels; in 2010 he took part in the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa and left his position with the state-run Telkom Indonesia to devote himself entirely to writing. In 2013 Andrea Hirata received the ITB Book Award 2013 and was a guest at litCologne and the Leipzig Book Fair .
