Andreas Alschinger
Andreas Alschinger (born November 20, 1791 in Angern , † January 18, 1864 in Vienna ) was an Austrian botanist.
Live and act
Alschinger came from a poor family. At the age of 16, he entered a grammar school in Linz , where he studied philosophy and theology for three years. In 1818 he went to the coastal country and worked from 1821 to 1858 as a professor of history, classical philology and natural history at the Zadar high school . He spent his subsequent retirement in Vienna.
In 1829 Alschinger traveled all over Dalmatia and studied botany. Later he explored the mountains around Zara. This is how the “Flora Jadrensis” published in 1832 was created, which contains information about the country's vegetation and includes Latin and German names as well as Italian, Greek and Dalmatian-Illyrian names. Before the publication of “Flora dalmata” by Roberto de Visiani , the work was often used as a source for studying the flora of the region.
In addition to botany, Alschinger also dealt with fauna and mineralogy and created corresponding collections.
