Andreas Hartmanni (Rector)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Andreas Hartmanni (actually Andreas Becker , * around 1432 in Eppingen ; † 1495?) Was a professor at the artist faculty and later at the law faculty of Heidelberg University , where he was elected rector seven times from 1463. He was also temporarily court counselor under the Electors Frederick I the Victorious and Philip .

Life

Andreas came from the Eppinger councilor family Becker and matriculated at the University of Heidelberg in 1448. In Heidelberg he Latinized his surname Becker zu Pistoris (from Latin pistor for baker) and gave himself the nickname Hartmannus , which is a Latinized form of hartman (Middle High German for "bold man"). In the early sources he is mostly listed as Hartmannus Becker (Pistoris) . He later renounced Becker and Pistoris, made the byname in genitive form his surname and again used the old first name, so that later sources finally know him as Andreas Hartmanni . The name Hartmanni was taken over by relatives from the same Becker family line. His somewhat younger relative, the later Strasbourg canon Andreas Hartmanni (around 1443–1507) underwent the same name change in Heidelberg from Becker to Pistoris to Hartmanni, and a third, in turn, younger close relative, Hartmannus Hartmanni (around 1472–1510), enrolled in Heidelberg Under this name from the beginning in 1488.

In 1450 Andreas Hartmanni passed his baccalaureate exam , and in 1459 he became dean of the artist faculty as a master's degree . Then he studied Roman and ecclesiastical law. In 1463 he was first elected rector of Heidelberg University. He would be elected to this office a total of seven times, more than any other colleague. He received his doctorate in both rights and was again dean of the artist faculty in 1469, then professor of the law faculty. At times he was court counselor under the Electors Friedrich I the Victorious and Philip and prepared several legal reports for the imperial city of Heilbronn , from which he probably drew benefices until his death . From 1492 until his death he was dean of the law faculty at Heidelberg University. As such, he was still in office in March 1495. Shortly afterwards he seems to have died, since his chair was no longer occupied in May 1495.

His son was the later Chancellor of the Palatinate, Hartmannus Hartmanni the Elder .
