Andreas Kesler
Andreas Kesler , also: Kessler ; (* July 17, 1595 in Coburg ; † May 15, 1643 in Coburg) was a German Lutheran theologian .
Life
Kessler came from a humble background. His father was the citizen and tailor Andreas Kessler and his mother Katharina was born Schmidt. First he attended the schools in his hometown and in 1610 moved to the University of Jena . There he became a baccalaureus in 1615 and a master's degree in philosophy in 1619. In 1619 he went to the University of Wittenberg , held private lectures and in 1621 became an adjunct at the philosophical faculty. In 1623 he returned to his hometown and became professor of logic at the Coburg high school Casimirianum .
In 1625 he received a call to superintendent in Eisfeld , he received his doctorate in theology in Jena in 1627 and in 1632 lost his library in a fire during a military attack by the Croatians in Eisfeld. In the following year he changed as superintendent and in 1634 was director of the grammar school in Schweinfurt . In 1635 he returned to Coburg and became General Superintendent of Coburg.
In this capacity, he suffered a heart attack while preaching and died as a result. Above all, Kessler appeared as a representative of Lutheran orthodoxy against the Socians and wrote several pamphlets on it. He also turned against the representatives of the so-called Papists in the confessional conflict .
On January 11, 1631, Kesler married Hedwig Catharina, the daughter of the Saxon rentmaster Hieronymus Stumpf (called Lahr) from Schleusingen. He concluded his second marriage in Coburg on April 10, 1638 with Katharina Lucretia, the daughter of the lawyer Christoph Waltz. Both marriages remained childless.
