Andreas Monheim
Andreas Monheim (born November 30, 1750 in Cologne , † April 9, 1804 in Aachen ) was a pharmacist and the last mayor of the free imperial city of Aachen .
Live and act
Andreas Monheim was born in Cologne in 1750 as the youngest son of the timber merchant Paul Monheim (1716 to around 1771). After finishing school he learned the profession of pharmacist in Cologne , Würzburg , Arlon , Biggel and Münster .
In 1775, at the age of 25, he moved to Aachen and became a provisional and from 1783 partner of Heinrich Martin Jakob Coebergh, who ran the Adler pharmacy in the Coeberghischen Stockhaus on the chicken market in the fourth generation. In the 18th century, Aachen had developed into a fashionable spa with an affluent public whose need for medicines was very high. The location of the pharmacy between the traditional center on the market and the hotel and bathing area on Komphausbadstrasse was very favorable, so that the pharmacy ran extremely well.
On October 15, 1783, Andreas married the wealthy Anna Maria Gertrud Peuschgens (born March 17, 1751 in Aachen, † September 5, 1814 in Aachen) and thereby obtained Aachen citizenship. His son Johann Peter Joseph was born in 1786, followed in 1788 and 1791 by Catherina and Heinrich, who died as an infant.
In November 1983 Andreas bought the Coeberghische Stockhaus from his principal and had it converted in 1786 by the Aachen builder Jakob Couven into a representative rococo- style house, Haus Monheim (which has housed the Aachen Couven Museum since 1958 ). From 1783 to 1788 Monheim and Coeberg ran the Adler pharmacy together, on September 3, 1788 Andreas became the sole owner and soon afterwards renamed the pharmacy to Monheims Apotheke .
On October 10, 1797, Andreas Monheim was elected mayor of Aachen under French suzerainty. The French had temporarily reinstated the imperial city constitution, which was repealed in 1794, but it was finally repealed on March 16, 1798. Andreas Monheim was thus together with the mayor of the alderman Vincenz Philipp Freiherr de Witte de Limminghe the last mayor of the free imperial city of Aachen .
After Andreas Monheim's death, his son Johann Peter Joseph took over the Monheim pharmacy and house.
